late night practice techniques

When everyone is sleeping late at night, I will put a thin blanket between the hammers and the strings on my upright piano….makes the thing sound like a rhodes actually.  Last night I was working on some pieces by Thelonius Monk, and noticed something…with that blanket in there, I have to really commit to the note, no half-stepping, because if you don’t play it like you mean it, no sound.  My mantra of the day is now, “Commit to the note and don’t look back!”
